Strategic Planning Revitalization
Virtually every organization today does some form of strategic planning. It is considered one of the “holy grails” of effective leadership. For the most part, these plans are clear, well constructed and present a road map for the future.
Unfortunately, the usefulness of these plans and the effort, time and resources to put them together are often diminished because of these factors:
- A top elite group within the organization does all the planning.
- Too few other members are asked to contribute.
- There is little effort at or success with gaining buy-in from those whose support is critical to the plan’s success.
- No one is asked or expected to commit to being held accountable for implementation and the plan’s outcomes.
- Leaders settle on having the plan, rather than actually implementing it.
As a result, too many plans either sit on the shelf gathering dust, are poorly implemented or badly miss the targets.
Future
- Inside this discipline, people are guided by their own, internal motivation to advance their own best interests and to that for which they are committed.
- This makes possible a sharp reduction of day to day managerial oversight, freeing up time to focus on higher level, more critical issues.
- Performance reviews become developmental reviews, with no surprises and collaboration, not confrontation.
- Individuals and teams become self-directed.
- People are acknowledged and rewarded for their achievements, with less need for criticism and punishment.
- Organizations grow and prosper.
